LAUREL PARK SCHOOL GOVERNOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

School governors make important collective decisions and the governing body is answerable to parents and the community. The statutory responsibilities of the governing body can be summarised as providing strategic direction, acting as a critical friend and ensuring accountability.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Promoting high standards of education and achievement

  • Planning the school’s long-term future

  • Setting the school’s aims and values

  • Appointing senior staff including the Head Teacher

  • Budgetary allocation and control

The day to day management of the school is the responsibility of the Head Teacher.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GOVERNORS?

Governing bodies comprise representatives from the school staff, the Local Authority, the local community, parents and, in particular circumstances, members of churches and other interest groups. Laurel Park School has a Governing Body made up of:

Parent Governors

Parent governors are elected by other parents at the school. Subject to disqualifications set out in DfE guidance, any parent which includes a person with parental responsibility, or carer, of a registered pupil at the school at the time of election is eligible to stand for election as a parent governor. Parent governors may continue to hold office until the end of their term of office even if their child leaves the school.

Staff Governors

Staff Governors are elected by staff within the school. Teaching and support staff who, at the time of election, are employed by either the governing body or the local authority to work at the school under a contract of employment, are eligible to be staff governors. Staff governors are elected by this same category of school staff. They cease to hold office when they cease to be employed at the school.

Co-opted governors

Co-opted governors are appointed by the governing body. They are people who in the opinion of the governing body have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

Partnership Governors

Partnership governors are appointed by the governing body. Individuals are only eligible to be nominated as a partnership governor if the person nominating them or the governing body appointing them, believes that they have the skills needed to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

Local Authority Governors

Local authority governors are nominated by the local authority but appointed by the governing body. The local authority can nominate any person who is eligible to be a local authority governor, but it is for the governing body to decide whether their nominee has the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school and meets any other eligibility criteria they have set.
